One of England’s most important main line railways comes to Train Simulator, joining the UK’s capital city with the Home Counties commuter towns to Bedford. The Midland Main Line was built in stages between the 1830s and the 1870s, and originated as three railway lines which met at the Tri Junct Station in Derby, which were later to become the Midland Railway. However, it was not until 1868 that the Midland Railway had a direct link to the UK’s capital, when a line was opened from Bedford to St Pancras, via Luton. While similar in design and purpose to the famed Electro-Motive F40PH diesel, the F40PHL-2 model was custom-built in 1988 for South Florida’s Tri-Rail commuter agency by locomotive remanufacturer Morrison-Knudsen, a firm also known as a construction and engineering company, building such famed infrastructure projects as the Hoover Dam and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The F40PHL-2 was built on the frames of retired Conrail GP40 locomotives, with 3, 200 horsepower Electro-Motive 645-series power plants and EMD Dash 2 electronics. The units’ 645-series engine provides power both for traction and for a HEP generator to provide electricity to its commuter consist. . To give the unique diesels a stylish exterior, Morrison-Knudsen used ex-Burlington Northern F45 cabs and carbodies. Based on the British Rail Mk3 body shape, the Class 321 EMU was originally built for the Network Southeast sector by BREL York between 1998 and 1991. Three sub-classes were built, the 321/3 and 321/4 for Network Southeast, and the 321/9 for services around the Leeds area. In total, 117 four-car train sets were built with a top speed of 100mph (161km/h), powered by AC 25kV overhead electric via a pantograph fitted to the PMSO vehicle. The high performance ES64F locomotive built by Siemens forms part of the company’s EuroSprinter range, and started life as a mixed traffic locomotive. The hustle and bustle of the UK’s capital city and the sprawling countryside of Essex and East Anglia come together in one fantastic modern route for Train Simulator. The 19th Century London Liverpool Street is the City terminus point of the Great Eastern Main Line before the line winds through the suburbs of London and past the Olympic Park, into Essex and on to Suffolk. The earliest section of the line (often shortened to ‘GEML’) opened in 1839 and ran from Devonshire Station (in Mile End, London) to Romford, Essex. A year later, the London terminus was moved to Bishopsgate and over subsequent years the line was extended further into Essex, reaching Ipswich in 1846. London Liverpool Street became the City terminus of the route in 1872, and now sees more than 57 million passengers each year. The 70 mile route from London to Ipswich sees daily fast passenger services to and from East Anglia with slower commuter services serving the ‘banker belt’. It is electrified at 25 kV AC using overhead wires and has a line speed of up to 100mph (161km/h). The line also carries frequent freight operations working from Felixstowe and Ipswich to Stratford, where connections are made with the North London Line and main lines radiating from London to other parts of the UK. A common sight on the line is the Siemens-built Class 360 EMU, operated by Greater Anglia and included with the route. These ‘Desiro’ units were introduced to service in 2003 and by mid-2004 had completely replaced the ageing Class 312 slam-door units. The four-car units have a top speed of 100mph and quick acceleration, making them ideal for long commuter lines with frequent station stops.
